Tweet-TV, as its called, brings together public comments about specific broadcasts and retransmits them for all viewers to see. Were told that viewers engaged with Tweet-TV would be able to interact with program content and submit their comments on programs. The broadcaster consolidates the real-time comments and transmits those short messages with the video and audio, enabling a transparent conversational overlay; in essence, the Mobile DTV application enables viewers to carry on an open discussion of program content or reply to questions that could be part of an audience quiz. The programs also being used to display pertinent information on digital signage, not to mention an M-EAS project thatll use Mobile DTV to get emergency alerts to those with compatible equipment. LG Broadens Capabilities of Mobile DTV for Viewers, Broadcasters

with Social Media, Digital Signage, Emergency Alert Applications

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 10, 2012 – Mobile digital television is evolving rapidly in 2012 beyond delivery of robust broadcast local TV signals to mobile and handheld devices.

At the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show, the co-inventor of the ATSC Mobile DTV Standard, LG Electronics (booth 8204), is showing exciting new applications that make mobile DTV an educational and informational resource to viewers watching wherever they go, including on public transportation, at public events, and even on the move with a portable device connected to social networks.

The new applications for Mobile DTV – including a unique social media platform and instantaneously updated digital signage – are being demonstrated in the CES Mobile DTV TechZone (Central Hall 13546) here this week as more than 140,000 expected attendees get their first view of tomorrows technological breakthroughs. LG mobile DTV technology also is at the heart of the mobile emergency alert system (M-EAS) being demonstrated publicly for the first time at CES as part of a landmark broadcast pilot project with PBS. While mobile DTV is just getting started as a compelling service for broadcasters, there are even more interesting applications made possible by mobile DTVs non-real-time capability, said Dr. Jong Kim, president of LGs U.S. R&D Lab, Zenith. Data can be transmitted to receiving devices designed to display social networking updates, weather, news crawls, and even location-based advertising.

Kim said LG is working with Harris Corporation, through its Broadcast Communications business, on ways to help TV stations leverage the power of their broadcast spectrum while enhancing service to their communities by transmitting live broadcasts to more locations. The ATSC Mobile DTV standard offers broadcasters remarkable flexibility to address the changing demands of consumers and advertisers. As broadcasters ramp up their national rollout of mobile DTV, LG is proud to pave the way with innovative new mobile DTV apps, he said.

Mobile DTV Keeps Bus Passengers Informed

LGs CES mobile DTV digital signage demonstration is made possible through a cooperative effort with Harris, which has developed the necessary MDTV transmission equipment that already powers an onboard mobile DTV digital signage system on city buses in Raleigh, N.C. using LG digital signage displays.

Mobile DTV is an ideal method of reaching groups of people – whether theyre in transit buses, on light rail, or even in a limousine or taxicab. At CES, CBS affiliate KLAS-TV is broadcasting live updates to show the flexibility of the standard and exemplify this new mobile DTV application.

The CES demo with KLAS builds on our experience with DTV pioneer WRAL-TV for a mobile signage system inside Raleighs downtown circulator bus route. There, were delivering live TV – typically news content or the stations main program content – to a center window on the display. Surrounding that transmission is important information, such as a weather forecast and radar, news headlines, community event listings and advertising, said Jay Adrick, vice president of broadcast technology for Harris Broadcast Communications.

Information outside the main signal is delivered by KLAS utilizing the ATSC Non-Real-Time candidate standard for data transmission. As seen on the LG digital signage display, weather radar information is typically updated every three minutes. The news crawl gets updated every five minutes, and the temperature can change every 10 minutes. Advertising is sent directly to the small Harris® InfoCaster™ Player that is attached to each display, with a playback schedule that is based on the time of day.

We are also working on geolocation-based advertising that could be triggered by the proximity to a certain spot, such as a restaurant. Theres also audio delivered as part of the system, which is automatically muted by driver announcements, said Adrick.

Outdoor venues, such as train stops for light rail, are other potential locations for MDTV digital signage technology. A number of broadcasters have expressed interest in the technology, and a new generation of the Harris product is now in field trials.

Tweet-TV Broadcasts Shared Experiences

Another new mobile DTV application shown by LG this week is Tweet-TV, which brings together public comments about specific broadcasts and retransmits them for all viewers to see.

In collaboration with Roundbox, LG is showing how the new Tweet-TV mobile DTV application that will allow viewer tweets to be displayed interactively on a mobile DTV receiver while a program is airing. A Harris MDTV transmitter would deliver viewer tweets, received as data files and then displayed on a prototype LG Android smartphone.

Progress on Pilot Project Highlighted at 2012 International CES;

Vegas PBS Delivers Video, Maps, Audio, Text to Mobile DTV Devices

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 8, 2012 – In the first public demonstration of the groundbreaking Mobile Emergency Alert System (M-EAS) Pilot Project, PBS and LG Electronics today showed how the new system, based on the ATSC Mobile Digital TV Standard, will benefit the public by giving them instantaneous, reliable, rich media alerts anywhere, anytime.

Highlighted in the Mobile Digital TV Tech Zone Pavilion at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (booth 13547, LVCC Central Hall) are key PBS partners on the pilot project: LG Electronics and its Zenith subsidiary, which have developed M-EAS receivers and provided funding for the project; and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which provided a matching grant to PBS. Harris Broadcast and Roundbox are providing key components and technology.

At CES here this week, Vegas PBS – one of four PBS stations participating in the M-EAS Pilot Project – is transmitting via mobile DTV signals with rich media emergency alert content for simulated national and local emergency scenarios, including a suspicious package threat, an approaching tornado, an AMBER Alert and impending tsunami.

The terrestrial broadcast M-EAS project will evaluate the systems capabilities for delivering alerts (utilizing video, audio, text, and graphics) to mobile DTV-equipped cellphones, tablets, laptops, netbooks, and in-car navigation systems in order to avoid the potential roadblocks of chronic congestion of cellular systems during emergencies. The goals of the year-long pilot are to develop the basic capability and to prove the viability of M-EAS, to build on existing standards with the cooperation of three public TV stations, and to create a template for deployment by any TV station – public or commercial. The first commercial broadcasters have already joined the project.

PBS Chief Technology Officer John McCoskey said the CES demonstration is a key milestone in the M-EAS project, for which the primary goal is to develop a system that can be easily replicated by both public and commercial broadcasters throughout the country to give access to vital emergency information to millions of viewers using mobile DTV receivers. Whether utilized in times of national emergency, to warn of a local st-approaching storm, or to advise the public of missing children, we believe that the new ATSC Mobile DTV system can be harnessed to do r more than just the delivery of linear TV channels, he said.

The public television broadcasters in Nevada, Massachusetts and Alabama are serving as test markets for the new M-EAS being developed now by PBS and LG. By using terrestrial over the air Mobile DTV broadcasting, rather than cellular network connectivity, M-EAS is expected to meet critical needs for emergency alerts.

At CES, were showing how this technology can help usher in a new era of mobile alerting systems on LG prototype smart phones. We think this new system will be extremely valuable to federal, state and local emergency management agencies and the public they serve, while extending the community service role of public and commercial broadcasters alike, said Dr. Jong Kim, president of Zenith R&D Lab, the U.S. research and development subsidiary of LG Electronics.

Public media has long been a vital source for listeners and viewers to obtain accurate and critical information about their communities, said Mark Erstling, senior vice president, system development and media strategy at CPB. We are proud to support PBS, local public media stations and LG in the development of new Mobile EAS technology. It leverages the speed and portability of new mobile technologies to help both public and commercial broadcasting stations provide essential local information in times of emergency.

M-EAS using mobile DTV would significantly enhance current capabilities for sending emergency alerts, because it does not have bandwidth bottlenecks that might overload current or planned cellular systems with millions of devices attempting to receive the alerts simultaneously. Utilizing terrestrial over-the-air broadcast TV transmissions, rather than relying on cell phone systems, the M-EAS requires no additional spectrum and will be an additional use of existing TV transmitters and towers. Standard equipment used to upgrade stations for Mobile DTV transmission will be utilized.

Building on its long history of innovating broadcasting technolbus digital signageogy, public television is leading the way in the development and testing of the M-EAS pilot project. CPB provided funding to PBS for this new communications platform. Public television broadcasters Vegas PBS (KLVX), WGBH (Boston), and Alabama Public Television stations WBIQ (Birmingham) and WAIQ (Montgomery) are providing rich media content and serving as test markets for the project. Seattle commercial station KOMO-TV (Fisher Communications) developed the compelling tsunami video alert simulation. (No CPB funding has gone to Fisher or KOMO-TV).

Beyond life-saving emergency broadcasts and text alerts, the next-generation emergency alert system has r-reaching public safety benefits – both for first responders who need to access critical information, and for federal and state agencies to instantly reach millions of Americans with a single broadcast.

With the Mobile EAS service, terrestrial broadcasters will be able to send everything from AMBER alert photos to detailed maps with evacuation routes, video clips, and extensive information that viewers anywhere/anytime will find invaluable in a disaster. M-EAS goes way beyond a short text message on a cell phone network that may become congested in an emergency. Its harnessing the power of one-to-many transmissions from a TV broadcaster to the viewing audience, said PBSs McCoskey.

Out to sea

The newest ship in the Royal Caribbean International cruise line fleet, the Allure of the Seas,this year integrated self-service, digital signage and other technologies to provide a high-tech customer experience.

The 16-deck ship, with nearly 3,000 staterooms, offers pervasive Wi-Fi access and more than 900 Internet access points; self-service customer kiosks that allow voyagers to access their accounts and check-in for their flights home; and award-winning, digital-signage wayfinding stations.

Four Winds Interactive designed the system that includes more than 200 digital displays to help passengers navigate the worlds largest cruise ship at 1,187 feet long and 208 feet wide. The signage network includes passive screens displaying non-interactive information as well as interactive touchscreens providing real-time data and wayfinding functionality.

San Diego Chargers ns lined up at games this season to use Inwindow Outdoors Game Face kiosks developed as part of amarketing campaignfor Union Bank

At each kiosk, ns had their picture taken, and Inwindows technology then overlaid the ns ce with a random ce paint pattern and super n hairdo while they watched.

Fans could then use wireless keyboards to input their e-mail addresses to receive their image via e-mail and upload images to Facebook. The email sent from the kiosk included the ns Game Face picture as well as Union Bank branding and a promotional offer from the bank. During the three games where the kiosks were in use, thousands of people interacted with them, which gave Union Bank access to thousands of emails for future marketing opportunities.

The kiosk project won theDigital Screenmedia Associationaward this year for Best Entertainment/Gaming Deployment in the self-service kiosk category.

I want candy

Candy dispensing vending machines have been around for years, but Canadas Mentor Group began deploying 300 candy-dispensing kiosks in February throughout malls and movie theaters in the United States. More than 400,000 people each month have been using the kiosks since they launched in February.

The mKiosks, designed to sell bulk items, including candy, have 42-inch HD touchscreens featuring branding, advertising and social marketing capabilities. Each kiosk has eight separate bins of bulk product and features a fully automated system to dispense products in the quantity and combinations ordered by the customer via the touchscreen menu, according to Graham Nelson, director of product development, The Mentor Group.

How it works

A customer chooses the size of candy mix and what products to put in the mix via touchscreen. The kiosk dispenses a cup and then each bin actuates to dispense the proper amount of candy into the chute and down into the cup. The entire process occurs behind a locked door that prevents any contamination, Nelson said. The customer pays with cash or credit and can receive change in the form of bills thanks to the MEI bill recycler. For credit, they can pay with any major credit card. The kiosks are customizable with every payment option available including coins, gift cards, EMV, and NFC. The kiosks are all connected to Mentors control network via 3G modems and are remotely configured and updated.

Riding high

Bicycle sharing kiosks have been popping up all over the country fromTexastoHawaiithis year, theB-cyclekiosks designed by KIOSK Information Systems one of the years largest kiosk deployments. (Trek makes the bikes and owns B-cycle.)

The B-cycle program allows users to rent a bike via kiosks in one area of his city and return it when finished to that same location or to a different one in the city, said Tim Stith, midwest region sales manager, KIOSK.

The kiosks, which consist of the fixed kiosk rental station/bicycle docks, and 10-12 bikes/each, run on solar and/or AC power. The power system includes a solar panel/batteries and a charge controller board. The kiosk houses a low-power outdoor color LCD, credit/member card reader, cellular communications kit, and energy efficient, outdoor rated mini-PC. Docking stations house a custom controller board, a proprietary locking mechanism, LED indicators, and an inventory RFID reader.

First-time or non-members rent at the kiosk, but B-Connected Card Holders can bypass the kiosk and check out at the docking station by passing their card over the RFID reader, releasing the bike in seconds, Stith said.

So r, deployments are in Denver and Boulder, Colo.; Omaha; Spartanburg, S.C.; Des Monies, Iowa; San Antonio, Texas; Kailua, Hawaii; Madison, Wis.; Chicago and throughout Florida. Baltimores service will open in the spring, Stith said.

CES 2012 Preview: Tablets Grow Up, Qi Wireless Charging Matures

Is there a technology show that gets the blood of a technology enthusiast pumping more than the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES)? The yearly technology bonanza is the Big Kahuna of technology events, as hardware and software makers scramble to put their newest products on display for buyers and the tech press.

This year atCES 2012, there are a few key trends afoot.

Mobile devices will continue to shine because mobile technology is still very much in a growth stage. Expect to see plenty oftabletsand smartphones and a good amount of noise surrounding ultrabooks, a subcategory of notebooks that are lighter and thinner than the standard spinning-disk-drive-based notebook. Wireless technology will continue to evolve as 4G LTE networks reach more users. TVs will razzle and dazzle the masses with Internet connectivity and 3D technology.

Tablet computers were the big talk of CES 2011, with countless manucturers doling out devices in the form ctor that gained market traction after Apples iPad. Androids open-source mobile OS has helped spawn the tablet feeding frenzy, it easy for manucturers to build a reasonably usable tablet device.

Marin Perez, managing editor of mobile technology blogIntoMobile, thinks tablets still have plenty of room for growth this year.

I expect tablets to be a part of the show, but the promotions will move from Look, we have a tablet! to This is our second-generation tablet, and it&8217;s actually good! While the newness of tablets is gone, this CES should be the year that companies other than Apple bring well-thought-out devices to this space, says Perez.

There is already discussion of new tablets from Motorola, Samsung, Acer and Toshiba their debut at the trade show. And Microsofts CEO Steve Ballmer will be on h3g digital signageand to deliver the companys last CES keynote address. Ballmer will no doubt take the opportunity to tout the companys tablet-friendly Windows 8 operating system.

One of the biggest headaches of mobile devices is the constant need for electric juice. With 4G-enabled smartphones rolling out in 2012, this problem will increase as 4G usage drains batteries ster than 3G.

Enter Qi (pronounced CHEE). Developed by theWireless Power Consortium, a group of 100-plus international technology companies, Qi is a wireless charging standard along the lines of other industry standards such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Using near-field magnetic induction, Qi-enabled chargers can be used to charge multiple mobile devices at the same time without having to plug them directly in to a power source.

The WPC plans to lay a big spread at CES 2012 as it prepares to show over 80 prototypes and devices at the trade show.

Camille Tang, president of ConvenientPower (a member company of the WPC), spoke at length about the quiet revolution Qi can offer.

The vision of Qi is that it&8217;s a whole ecosystem. Running around and not having to find the right socket or plug for your mobile device is what universal wireless charging is about. We predict wireless charging will be an $18 billion ecosystem across many industries, says Tang.

Many may be miliar with the charging pads for smartphone devices that some manucturers have made. The key difference with Qi is that as an industry standard, it can enforce interoperability across a diverse range of mobile devices, unlike some of the existing charging pads on the market, which are device-specific.

A key part of establishing this kind of cross-platform compatibility is getting the buy-in of numerous technology manucturers. To that end, the WPC has been very successful and has grown from a 60-member consortium to an alliance of more than 100 companies. It boasts membership from heavy-hitters such as Samsung, LG, Nokia and Texas Instruments, to name just a few.

While the organization is initially targeting the smartphone market with its low-power standard, there are plans to have Qi built into furniture, medical devices, cars and household appliances, Tang says. Qi chargers have already been put in place in an airport in Canada and in cafes in Japan, she adds.

The WPC also has a group working on developing the medium-power standard that will enable manucturers to integrate Qi with tablets, notebooks and more.

People used to say, why on earth would I want to carry a phone with me everywhere? I can just use a pay phone. Then, people used to say, I can get on the Internet at the office or at home, why on earth would I want to get on the Internet everywhere? Tang says. The last mile in wireless is wireless power.

Last year saw 4G technology make its debut, but expect 4G LTE to really make a dent in 2012. There should be a host of 4G-ready smartphones from Motorola, Samsung, HTC and more at this years CES, and with AT&T and Sprint ramping up their 4G LTE networks, therell be more LTE network bandwidth for everyone to chew on. That big boost in mobile broadband has the potential to change the way we work and play.

I&8217;ve been able to do my job while riding in a cab, thanks to these blazing-st speeds, says IntoMobiles Perez. I&8217;ve had a chance to use AT&T&8217;s 4G LTE, and users will definitely notice the difference. Even if you&8217;re not streaming HD videos on the go, web pages load ster, and it&8217;s quicker and easier to attach high-resolution pictures. Once you go 4G LTE, you don&8217;t want to go back.

While 4G promises blazing speeds and increased performance, it drains the battery on smartphones ster and can chew through data plans if users arent careful.

The downside is that these [4G] speeds and ease of use make it much easier to blow through your data caps. I expect most consumers will have to diligently switch to Wi-Fi and monitor their data usage, adds Perez.

They say that in Texas, everything is bigger. In 2012, the same might be said of displays at least when it comes to screen size.

Where just a few years ago, seeing a 32-inch or larger display screen in a commercial setting was an anomaly, today they are in quick-service restaurants, airports or train stations, shopping malls or individual retail stores, hotels or casino lobbies, healthcare cilities, the reception areas of businesses or nearly anywhere else people gather or pass by in numbers, says Ashley Flaska, vice president of marketing for NEC Display Solutions, in aDigital Signage Todaystory.

LG has already made waves with the announcement that it will debut a 55-inch OLED TV at the show. On top of providing improved picture quality, OLED technology allows the display to be incredibly thin. The LG OLED TV is said to be a mere 4 millimeters thick. Thats thinner than the iPhone 4, which is 9.3mm thick.

In addition to LGs OLED show pony, therell be 3D TVs and smart TVs, which are TVs connected to the Internet. A host of companies will debut Google TVs, which use Googles TV-specific operating system for displaying and using web content on your television set.
